In 1977 we all saw the iconic design of the Lotus Esprit S1 plunge into the ocean and transform into a submersible vehicle, in the classic James Bond film, "The Spy who Loved Me". From that moment on, the founder of TE Systems decided that he would work at Lotus Cars. This resulted in the founder of TE Systems enjoying a nineteen year career at the world famous sports car manufacturer as a key member of Lotus Engineering.
TE Systems has had the opportunity to work on one of the only two cars used for the original film after being approached by local Coach Trimmers Nick and Steve Fulcher during an interior rebuild. Wiring modifications included a period Motorola radio being adapted to accept an I-Pod connection, the rebuilding of an obsolete, period, periscope VDO clock and a rocket launch button on the gear lever! Upon completion of the restoration, the car was exhibited at the Lotus Factory as part of the company's 60th anniversary celebrations. Afterwards, the car was auctioned by Bonham's and was sold to a private collector in the USA for over £100,000. Not bad for a Lotus Esprit S1, with such a unique history. The following week we had the opportunity to meet Roger Moore, which was a nice way for us to complete our "Spy who Loved Me" experience.
